What Australia’s AML/CTF Reforms Mean for Investors

Australia’s anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing (AML/CTF) reforms are reshaping the way investors verify their identity when accessing financial products and services.

The reforms form part of a broader effort to strengthen protections against financial crime, fraud and identity theft while modernising Australia’s compliance framework. As CFMG Capital adapts to the updated requirements, investors can expect enhanced identity verification measures to become a standard part of the onboarding process or in some cases when you re-invest with us.

This will include biometric verification as part of ongoing customer due diligence procedures. Combined with traditional identification documents, biometric checks provide an additional layer of security and help organisations verify that individuals are who they claim to be.

In most cases, investors will be asked to provide identification documents and complete a facial verification check using a smartphone or computer. The technology compares a live image of the individual against their identification documents to verify their identity.

The move towards biometric verification reflects the financial services industry’s continued focus on strengthening security and reducing the risk of fraud. Rather than relying on investors emailing copies of identification documents, secure digital verification platforms identity checks to be completed within a protected environment. This helps reduce the risk of sensitive information being exposed if an investor’s email account is compromised while providing greater confidence in the identity verification process.

While the additional verification requirements may introduce an extra step during the onboarding process, it’s designed to support a more secure and efficient experience for investors. In many cases, identity verification can be completed within minutes.

As the industry continues to adapt to the updated AML/CTF framework, enhanced customer due diligence and biometric verification are expected to become a routine part of establishing investment relationships. While the process may look different from previous onboarding requirements, it represents an important step towards strengthening the integrity and security of Australia’s financial system.
